Easter Activities in Valdegovía: guided tours, horse riding lessons and 4x4 routes

Guided tours of the Torre Palacio Varona (Villanañe) 945353035 ó 945353040

The origen of this tower, considered by the historian Micaela Portilla as “the best fortified, conserved structure in Alava”, takes us back to the end of the 14th century or the beginnings of the 15th. The origen of the name Varona dates back to the 7th century when Lady María Pérez was born, a woman that took Alfonso I, The Warrior, as a prisoner in a fight against the king of León and Castilla, she was known for her bravery and after this she became known as “Varona”. From then and until the present day the tower has been inhabited by her direct descendants.

Open from Thursday 28th March to Monday 1st April, 11am to 2pm and 4pm to 7pm. Price for guided visits: 3€ for adults and 2€ for children, students, the retired and groups of at least 10 people.

It is a beautiful church in honour of “Our Lady of Assumption” and it dates back to the 18th century. Built during the transition from Romantic to Gothic, elements have been added later on such as the chapels, the tower and the central altarpiece. .. It has been described as one of the richest historical sites in Alava.

Guided tours of the iglesia de Bachicabo (945 35 30 40)

Embrace the experience of seeing two altapieces in the church of Bachicabo.
The lucky discovery of an altarpiece in the apse of the church in 2006 was a major find during a restauration of the church. The size of the altapiece meant that two could be put on show without great alterations to its incial position.
